Tofino Salmon Fishing Report 2004It was a great year for saltwater fly fishing here in Tofino, BC. The quality of fish was exceptional, from the beginning of July right through to the middle of September big Coho (Silver) Salmon were being caught on a daily basis. The last half of August also regularly saw Chinook (King) salmon caught on the bucktail, which is an unforgettable experience sometimes lasting up to 2 hours. It wasn't just the quality of the fish being caught here in Clayoquot Sound - the numbers of Coho salmon were amazing. Many people in Tofino were convinced it was the best fishing in 30 years. There was hardly a day when limits weren't caught and dozens of beautiful coho salmon being caught and released. The reels were singing all season long; the top trip of the year saw 42 Coho including 8 double headers caught and released with a solid 9 pound average. Many other trips saw catch count in the high teens and twenties; it was a year that made a lot of fisherman in Tofino very happy and all early signs point toward another excellent year here in Clayoquot Sound for 2005. |
